Mounting
During handling, the rings and roller complement of spherical roller bearings may be axially displaced from their normal position. This is especially likely where the bearings are mounted with the shaft or housing in the vertical position:
- The roller complement, together with the inner or outer ring, will move downward and result in no more clearance.
- When the bearing rings expand or contract as a result of an interference fit, preload is likely to result.
Therefore, wherever possible:
- Mount spherical roller bearings with the shaft or housing in the horizontal position.
- Rotate the inner or outer ring to align the rollers during mounting. Where this is not feasible, use a bearing handling tool or other device to keep the bearing components arranged centrally.
Mounting sealed bearings
does not recommend heating sealed spherical roller bearings above 80 °C (175 °F) during the mounting process.However, if higher temperatures are necessary, make sure that the temperature does not exceed the permissible temperature of either the seal or grease, whichever is the lowest.
Mounting bearings with a tapered bore
Bearings with a tapered bore are mounted with an interference fit. To obtain the proper degree of interference, one of the following methods can be used:
- Measuring the clearance reduction
- Measuring the lock nut tightening angle
- Measuring the axial drive-up
- Applying the Drive-up Method For bearings with d > 100 mm, recommends using the Drive-up Method. This is a fast, reliable and safe method to achieve the appropriate interference fit.
- Measuring the inner ring expansion
